History

The Virgil I. Grissom Elementary School was built in 1970 to serve the children of the community of Hegewisch on the far southside of Chicago. Grissom School was named after Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom who was the second United States’ astronaut in space. Colonel Grissom was the first astronaut to make two space flights, the first being Liberty Bell 7 and the second, Project Gemini.

Our Faculty and Staff

Testimonials

"I've been here for about five years, coming from another school. The staff here are friendly and like to joke around to make you feel like part of the family. The students are nice because they come from good families that want the best for them, just like we do.

–Ms. Kennedy, 6-8 Social Studies Teacher

"Coming to Grisham made me a better teacher. Whatever challenges existed at my previous school, they weren't inspiring me. Here, I found the inspiration I needed. I felt my passion fading and needed a new spark, which Grisham provided. I'm fortunate to be here and have no plans to leave."

–Mrs. Vargas, Intermediate Teacher

"In my first year here, amidst significant changes, I was deeply impressed by the teachers' willingness to collaborate and adapt without much resistance. Their open arms and dedication surpassed my expectations. Excited for next year, we'll continue addressing student needs and filling gaps to ensure they excel."

–Ms. Battista, MTSS Lead/Interventionist

"I've been at Chris for 19 years and often wonder why I'd ever leave. Substitutes frequently mention how wonderful our school is, reminding me of our unique environment. Everyone, from lunchroom staff to custodians, deeply cares for every child. We've maintained a respectful atmosphere through three administrations, and our community's uniqueness plays a significant role. Every staff member, not just teachers, receives appreciation from students. It's a great reminder of our special place here."

–Ms. Sharp, Art Teacher

“The teachers here are amazing! My kids are doing exceptionally well, they love going to School every day and are excited about what they are learning. Our new principal is amazing, she’s so down to earth and easy to talk to.”
